Robbery advice to help prevent being a victim of theft from your home this summer.
Sussex Police are promoting Operation Magpie which is aimed at preventing burglary in homes, a risk that increases in the summer months. They are encouraging Sussex residents to take extra care this summer to ensure you are not the victim of a robbery at your home.
If you leave your property empty, even if you are just in the back garden, lock all the doors and close the windows to the front of the property.
Keep your car keys, house keys, wallet, handbag, credit cards out of sight of the front door or windows.
If you have ladders stored at the property, be aware they could be used to gain access to the first floor of your property so keep them stored in a garage or locked up to an immovable object in the garden, or alongside the wall of the property.
Keep your tools locked up in your garage or shed as these could be used by an intruder to force doors or windows.
If possible, fit visible security lighting, an intruder alarm or even a CCTV system to secure your home.
Check boundary fencing, walls, gates etc to ensure they are as secure as possible.
Without turning your home into a fortress, try to keep everything locked up as much as possible. Don’t trust visitors to your door and consider joining, or setting up a local Neighbourhood Watch.
